Gearing Up for Kyrgyzstan

An ISM Guide to Clothing and Equipment for Alpine Expeditions

The Learning Starts Here

Preparing for an alpine expedition in Kyrgyzstan involves some different considerations from a typical week of mountaineering in the European Alps.

This equipment guide is designed specifically for ISM expeditions in Kyrgyzstan, which typically operate up to a maximum altitude of approximately 5,500 metres.

Kyrgyzstan is home to some of the highest mountains in Central Asia, including several peaks exceeding 7,000 metres. Expeditions to these higher summits involve significantly different conditions, greater altitude-related challenges and the need for more specialised high-altitude clothing and equipment. This guide is not intended for those expeditions.

One of the biggest differences between our Kyrgyzstan expeditions and a typical alpine climbing week is spending an extended period at an advanced base camp (ABC), often situated around 4,000 metres, while undertaking consecutive days of alpine climbing in remote mountain environments.

Managing your clothing, equipment, warmth and recovery becomes particularly important when you're spending several nights at altitude, often without the opportunity to properly dry equipment or return to the comfort of a mountain hut.

Building on the Equipment You Already Own

Our approach at ISM is straightforward. You shouldn't need to purchase an entirely new set of mountaineering equipment to join an expedition in Kyrgyzstan.

If you already have suitable equipment for summer alpine mountaineering or Scottish winter climbing, much of it may be perfectly appropriate.

The challenge is identifying where additional warmth, insulation or more specialised equipment will make a genuine difference.

Where new equipment is necessary, we'll help you choose items that offer good value and can continue to be useful for future climbing trips in the Alps, Scottish winters or other mountain ranges.

Some equipment, particularly warmer mountaineering boots and expedition sleeping bags, may be more specialised. Whether these are necessary depends on the altitude, objectives and expected conditions of your particular expedition.

Advice from Our ISM Mountain Guides

Our ISM Mountain Guides have extensive experience climbing and leading expeditions in Kyrgyzstan and other mountain ranges.

Throughout this guide, we'll explain what to look for, why particular features matter and share practical advice gained from living and climbing in remote mountain environments.

Where we mention specific brands or products, these are recommendations rather than requirements. There are many excellent alternatives, and equipment you already own may be perfectly suitable.

Function first. Fit second. Brand third.

Kyrgyzstan is a vast mountainous country, with considerable differences in altitude, climate and conditions between regions. Equipment suitable for one expedition may not be appropriate for another.

Before making significant purchases, we strongly recommend discussing your expedition objectives and equipment choices with your ISM Mountain Guide.

We're always happy to help you make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary expense.

Mountaineering Boots

Winter B3 Mountaineering Boots

For ISM's alpine climbing expeditions in Kyrgyzstan, which typically involve climbing peaks around 5,000 metres and occasionally a little higher, a good-quality pair of warm, insulated B3 mountaineering boots is generally entirely suitable.

If you already own suitable B3 boots for Scottish winter mountaineering or colder alpine conditions, there's a good chance they'll be perfectly adequate for your expedition.

B3 boots provide the stiffness and support needed for technical mountaineering, including climbing on snow, ice and mixed terrain while wearing crampons.

The important consideration is choosing a boot that provides sufficient warmth for the expected conditions, fits comfortably and works well with your crampons. Not all B3 boots offer the same level of insulation, so lightweight summer-oriented models may be less suitable.

ISM Guide Recommendation: Arc'teryx Acrux AR Mountaineering Boot

One particularly useful feature of the Arc'teryx Acrux AR is its removable inner boot.

When spending several nights at an advanced base camp, often around 4,000 metres, keeping your boots dry becomes an important part of managing your equipment.

During a long mountain day, moisture can accumulate inside your boots through perspiration, even when the weather is cold and dry.

With the Acrux AR, you can remove the inner boots at the end of the day and bring them into your sleeping bag overnight, helping them dry and remain warm for the following morning.

This can make a considerable difference when heading out for another mountain day, particularly during periods of consecutive climbing.

Do You Need Double Boots?

For our typical Kyrgyzstan alpine expeditions, specialist high-altitude double boots are not normally necessary.

These are generally designed for colder conditions and higher-altitude objectives than those we usually undertake.

If you already own suitable insulated winter B3 boots, there's no reason to purchase another pair simply because you're travelling to Kyrgyzstan.

As always, boot fit, warmth and suitability for your particular expedition are more important than the brand.

If you're unsure whether your existing boots will be suitable, please speak to your ISM Mountain Guide before making a purchase.

Sleeping Bags and Sleeping Mats

A good night's sleep is particularly important when spending several nights at an advanced base camp (ABC), often around 4,000 metres.

Being warm and comfortable overnight is not simply about comfort. Good sleep is nourishing and essential for recovery, particularly when undertaking consecutive days of alpine climbing at altitude.

This is one area where it's worth investing in good-quality equipment.

Sleeping Bags

You'll need a good-quality four- or five-season down sleeping bag suitable for the cold temperatures we may experience at advanced base camp.

Generally speaking, sleeping bags suitable for temperatures around -20°C provide a useful benchmark for colder expedition conditions.

Examples include expedition sleeping bags from Mountain Equipment, such as the Snowline and Iceline, or the Rab Expedition 1000.

These are excellent options if you're planning future expeditions at higher altitudes. However, they're expensive and may be unnecessarily warm for many other mountaineering trips.

For clients who don't anticipate needing a specialist expedition sleeping bag in the future, a good-quality four-season bag with a comfort rating around -12°C can be a more versatile investment, provided it's suitable for the expected conditions of their particular expedition.

Examples include suitable models from the Mountain Equipment and Rab four-season ranges.

These sleeping bags can also be useful for Scottish winter climbing and alpine bivouacs, making them a practical option for mountaineers who want equipment they'll continue using.

ISM Guide Advice – It's Better to Be Too Warm Than Too Cold

When choosing a sleeping bag, we'd generally encourage you to favour warmth.

Most good-quality expedition sleeping bags have a full-length zip, allowing you to regulate your temperature easily by opening the bag if you become too warm.

What is considerably more difficult is making a sleeping bag warmer when temperatures fall below what it's designed for.

If you already own a suitable sleeping bag but are concerned it might be a little too cold, a warm fleece sleeping bag liner can be a relatively inexpensive way to add some additional insulation without purchasing an entirely new bag.

However, if you're buying a new sleeping bag, think carefully about the environment in which you'll be sleeping.

Imagine replacing a night in the Goûter Hut on Mont Blanc, at around 4,000 metres, with a night in a tent at the same altitude.

Instead of sleeping in a mountain hut with beds, duvets and the warmth generated by other people inside, you're sleeping in a tent, directly above cold ground, with only your sleeping bag and sleeping mat providing insulation.

It's a very different environment, and one that deserves careful consideration when choosing your sleeping system.

Sleeping Mats – The Two-Mat System

We recommend using two sleeping mats together: a closed-cell foam mat and a good-quality insulated inflatable sleeping mat.

Place the foam mat underneath your inflatable mat.

This provides several advantages:

• Additional insulation: Two mats help reduce heat loss into the cold ground.
• Improved comfort: A good inflatable mat provides valuable cushioning and support.
• Protection: The foam mat helps protect your inflatable mat from damage.
• Backup: If your inflatable mat develops a puncture, you still have the foam mat as an insulating layer.

A lightweight closed-cell foam mat, such as a Therm-a-Rest Z-style mat, combined with a suitable insulated inflatable mat, works particularly well.

Down-filled or otherwise well-insulated inflatable mats can provide excellent additional warmth and comfort, often without a significant increase in packed weight.

ISM Guide Advice – Your Sleeping System Works Together

Your sleeping bag and sleeping mat should be considered as one complete sleeping system.

Even an excellent sleeping bag will struggle to keep you warm if you're losing heat into the ground through a poorly insulated mat.

Spending several nights at altitude, recovering from long mountain days and preparing for the next climb makes a warm, comfortable sleeping system particularly valuable.

Sleep well, recover well and be ready for another mountain day.

Clothing & Insulation

For our Kyrgyzstan expeditions, you'll generally need the same clothing you would use for summer alpine mountaineering, supplemented with a few additional layers for colder conditions and extended periods at base camp or advanced base camp (ABC).

The aim is to build on the clothing you already own, adding warmth and versatility where needed rather than purchasing an entirely new wardrobe.

Warm Thermal Base Layers

We recommend bringing warmer thermal base layers for colder mountain days and evenings at altitude.

A long-sleeved thermal top and matching thermal leggings provide additional insulation beneath your normal alpine clothing.

These are particularly useful when climbing higher peaks, but they can also be worn inside your sleeping bag to provide extra warmth overnight.

Choose breathable synthetic or merino wool fabrics that manage moisture effectively.

ISM Guide recommendations: Arc'teryx Rho thermal top and Rho Bottom.

Active Insulating Jacket

A lightweight, breathable synthetic insulating jacket is an excellent addition to your normal alpine clothing.

Modern active insulation provides warmth while allowing excess heat and moisture to escape during physical activity. It offers a practical alternative to traditional heavier-weight fleece jackets, with excellent warmth for its weight and a relatively small packed size.

At ISM, our Guides favour synthetic insulation for active mountaineering because it continues to provide useful warmth even when damp from perspiration or changing weather conditions.

This is a versatile layer for colder approaches, climbing higher peaks and wearing beneath your hard shell jacket when additional protection is needed.

ISM Guide recommendation: Arc'teryx Proton Hoody.

Warm Insulated Jacket – Base Camp & ABC

A substantial insulated jacket is particularly important for spending time around base camp and advanced base camp.

Evenings at altitude can be cold, particularly after the sun disappears behind the surrounding mountains.

After a long mountain day, having a warm jacket to put on while resting, eating or relaxing outside your tent makes a considerable difference to comfort.

A good-quality down jacket offers excellent warmth for its weight and packs down relatively small, although synthetic alternatives can be particularly useful in damp conditions.

ISM Guide examples: Rab Neutrino insulated jacket or Arc'teryx Nuclei Parka.

Insulated Trousers – An ISM Guide's Top Tip!

Keeping your legs warm is something that's often overlooked when preparing for an alpine expedition.

After a long day climbing, particularly when spending several nights at ABC, having a pair of lightweight insulated trousers to pull on over your climbing trousers makes an enormous difference to comfort.

They're particularly useful during cold evenings, when sitting around camp, cooking or relaxing outside your tent.

They can also provide additional warmth inside your sleeping bag if temperatures drop overnight.

This is one of our ISM Guides' top equipment recommendations for life at base camp and advanced base camp.

ISM Guide examples: Arc'teryx Nuclei Pant, Patagonia Nano Puff Pants or suitable insulated trousers from Rab.

Winter-Weight Softshell Climbing Trousers

Your climbing trousers should be sufficiently warm and durable for the colder temperatures often encountered in Kyrgyzstan.

A slightly heavier softshell trouser than you might normally use during summer alpine climbing provides additional warmth, wind resistance and protection while remaining breathable and comfortable during physical activity.

They should also allow sufficient room for thermal leggings underneath when needed.

ISM Guide recommendation: Arc'teryx Gamma AR Pant or equivalent.

Hard Shell Jacket & Trousers

Your normal alpine waterproof hard shell jacket and trousers should be suitable for most ISM Kyrgyzstan expeditions.

A lightweight, durable and breathable hard shell provides essential protection from wind, snow and poor weather while allowing you to layer insulating clothing underneath.

There's generally no need to purchase heavier expedition-specific waterproof clothing if you already own a suitable alpine hard shell.

ISM Guide recommendations: Arc'teryx Alpha Jacket or Beta Jacket, together with suitable waterproof trousers.

Gloves & Warm Mitts

We recommend bringing a selection of gloves suitable for the range of temperatures and conditions you may encounter.

Your normal summer alpine climbing gloves will be useful for milder conditions and technical ropework, while warmer winter mountaineering gloves provide additional protection during colder climbing days.

It's worth bringing both your summer alpine and Scottish winter glove options if you already own them.

An additional pair of warm insulated mitts is strongly recommended.

Mitts provide considerably more warmth than most gloves and can be particularly valuable during very cold conditions, at rest stops or when spending time around camp.

Having several options allows you to adjust your hand protection as conditions change throughout the expedition.

Rucksacks, Trekking Poles & Expedition Essentials

Trekking Poles – Essential

A good-quality pair of trekking poles with snow baskets is essential for our Kyrgyzstan expeditions, particularly when walking on snow-covered slopes, crossing glaciers and breaking trail through deep snow.

Poles provide valuable balance and support when carrying a heavier rucksack, help maintain a steady walking rhythm and reduce fatigue during longer approaches and descents.

We strongly recommend Z-style folding trekking poles, which collapse into a compact size and can be carried easily and securely inside your rucksack when climbing.

Having your poles readily available for the descent can make walking down steep, snowy or uneven terrain considerably safer and easier, particularly after a long mountain day.

ISM Guide Recommendation: LEKI Sherpa FX One Trekking Z-Pole

The LEKI Sherpa FX One combines lightweight carbon construction with a robust aluminium lower section, making it particularly well suited to alpine mountaineering and expeditions.

The carbon sections help keep the overall weight down, while the aluminium lower section provides additional durability in the areas most exposed to knocks and abrasion when travelling through rocky terrain and boulder fields.

This combination offers an excellent balance of low weight, compact packed size and durability.

Adrian's Guide Advice – Tested in the Mountains

After years of use on alpine climbs and expeditions, Adrian's LEKI Sherpa FX One poles have really stood the test of time.

The aluminium lower section has proved particularly valuable when moving through boulder fields and rocky terrain, where trekking poles regularly come into contact with rocks.

In Adrian's experience, a carbon lower section would likely have suffered enough damage to require replacement by now.

It's a small design detail, but an important one when choosing equipment that needs to be both lightweight and durable.

Mountaineering Rucksack – Approximately 50–60 Litres

A comfortable, durable mountaineering rucksack should have sufficient capacity to carry your personal climbing equipment, clothing and sleeping system into and out of advanced base camp.

For most of our Kyrgyzstan expeditions, a rucksack of approximately 50–60 litres provides a good balance between carrying capacity and versatility.

The packed size of your sleeping bag will be one of the main factors determining how much space you need.

Some experienced climbers with particularly compact equipment may manage with a smaller pack of around 45 litres.

ISM Guide Advice – One Rucksack, Two Jobs

One of the most important considerations is choosing a rucksack that works well both when fully loaded and when carrying considerably less equipment.

You'll need sufficient capacity for the approach into ABC, but once established at camp, your rucksack will mainly be used as a day pack for climbing.

Look for a mountaineering pack that can be compressed when carrying less equipment, remains comfortable on longer approaches and allows freedom of movement when climbing.

A suitable rucksack is likely to be similar to one you might use for a multi-day alpine climbing trip carrying bivouac equipment, or for longer Scottish winter mountain days.

There's generally no need to purchase a specialist expedition rucksack if you already own a suitable mountaineering pack.

ISM Guide examples: Black Diamond Speed 50, Blue Ice Yeti 50 or a similar lightweight alpine mountaineering rucksack.

Camp Footwear – An ISM Guide's Top Tip!

Finally, and perhaps controversially in certain image-conscious mountaineering circles, bring a pair of Crocs!

They're excellent for wearing around base camp and ABC, allowing your feet a welcome break from mountaineering boots after a long day climbing.

They're lightweight, easy to slip on and quick to dry.

They can also be particularly useful for crossing shallow rivers during approaches, saving you from soaking your mountaineering boots before you've even reached the mountains.

Just wait and see…
