Oberland Trek
Thisa beautiful trek and climb is a circuit in the central region of the Bernese Oberland. It includes a superb 'walking summit' - the Wildstrubel (3243m) - and the famous Petersgrat, a remarkable high ridge walk with commanding views of the Oberland peaks and across to the Swiss Valais.
1. 1900 RV at Hotel Le Grand Chalet, Leysin.
2. We take a taxi to Leukerbad, which is perched above the Rhone Valley and known for its thermal baths. It is surrounded by impressive cliffs up which a cable car takes us to the Gemmipass. A very pleasant walk takes us to the friendly Lammeren hut at 2501m. Here there is time for an explanation of the relevant equipment and the rope work for the ascent the next day.
3. An early start is needed to get hard snow on our glacier climb to Wildstrubel 3243m (3-4 hours). As the inscription on the summit cross says, ‘…a little piece of heaven’. We return to Lammeren and when suitably refreshed make a pleasant stroll to Schwarenbach (2060m). This is a historic ‘berghotel’ and a really nice place to stay!

4. A steep path up to Wyssi Flue 2’472m then follows the scenic Uschenengrat into the Uschenen valley. A good track then leads through high meadows to Allmenalp. From here we can take a lift down to Kandersteg and relax at the Hotel Alpina.
5. A bus runs up to Selden at 1’537m. In the wild remote surroundings of Gasterntal we climb up steeply onto the glacier, the Kanderfirn. Here we put our crampons on and walk on up the glacier to the Mutthorn hut 2’900. This is a strenuous 7-hour day.
6. We ascend on the glacier to the famous Petersgrat 3’203m (2 hours). This gives exhilarating walking with stunning views of the Valais Alps. Heading back E. under the Tschingelhorn, we join a steep path and drop into the Lotschental at Fafleralp (1’787m) where we take a bus or train back to Leysin.
7. Depart a.m. after breakfast at the Grand Chalet.
